9/11 (Sept 11, 2001)

An attack organized by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group. They hijacked four planes and attempted to crash them into several important American buildings. They successfully did so with the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, but failed with the last plane. Countless people were killed as a result of this attack.

Qatar World Cup (Nov 20, 2022 – Dec 18, 2022)

Qatar was named the host for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Unlike coverage for other FIFA events, many news outlets sought to stir up controversy and have it cancelled. Qatar was one of the first Muslim countries to host FIFA but instead this was used to spread Islamophobia.

Muslim Travel Ban (Jan 27, 2017)

What is referred to as the “Muslim Travel Ban” is a series of orders passed by former President Trump. These orders banned travel to the United States from majority Muslim countries- Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, and many others. In addition, it also had the United States refuse to accept any Syrian refugees.

Hijab Ban in Sports (Feb 21, 2022)

An attempt to exclude and ostracize Muslims, the French senate has attempted to ban Hijabs from sporting events. Many Muslim athletes wear the Hijab, and say they wont be able to play if they are banned. This is a direct act of Islamophobia.
