Orientalism in Art
Orientalism has always been prominent in art, both as the subject matter and the atmosphere around it. Many paintings and illustrations have been made that depict Eastern people in stereotypical ways, ranging from hyper-violent to sexualized. On the other side, there has been Orientalism and Islamophobia perpetrated even if there were good intentions. In Islam, the idea of aniconism is followed and depictions of the Prophet Muhammad and any other prophets are forbidden, yet there has a plethora of visual creations by non-muslims. There has been more public outrage against these microaggressions, with the perpetrators facing consequences for mindlessly showing such things. Shown below is a Hilye by Hâfiz Osman, a respectful “depiction” of Prophet Muhammad, which is an ornately decorated text describing him. The rest is art that depicts orientalist and harmful portrayals of Eastern people.
